D.C. United retains prime position in the Eastern Conference with a 1-1 draw against Toronto F.C. at home on Saturday. As one of the East’s leading teams, the Black-and-Red picked up a point to remain in contention as the playoffs grow closer. Captain Wayne Rooney even earned a statement goal to assert himself as one of the league’s best.

The game was a hard-fought battle, with little progress being made on either side. While Nick DeLeon scored in the 19th minute for Toronto, the Black-and-Red stood strong throughout the game. Then, in stoppage time, Toronto’s Ayo Akinola fouled Rooney in the penalty zone. This allowed for a free kick which Rooney converted, allowing his team to escape with the draw. Though given how the game ended, the draw feels like a victory for United with a crucial point.

United moves to 8-7-4 on the season. With 31 points, they are one point under Philadelphia Union for control of the Eastern Conference. Toronto stagnates at 6-5-7, still holding to the last playoff spot. Every point counts as United looks to pick up ground in the competitive Eastern Conference. A tie against a playoff team shows the drive for competition remains strong.
