DC United vs. Atlanta United MLS Preview: March 3, 2019

The Black-and-Red take to the field for the first time this season against defending MLS Champions Atlanta United at Audi Field. The team looks to capitalize off their late run last season as they await the new challenge into 2019.

Atlanta was a strong team last season, winning the MLS Cup as the number one seed and smashing all competition. Despite their high-scoring and speedy attack, The Five Stripes have changed lineups since then. Miguel Almiron, a key player on their championship squad, moved to Newcastle for this season and left a weaker offense. However, Atlanta is still an impressive squad, currently participating in the quarter-finals of the inter-continental CONCACAF Champions’ League against Monterrey.

On the other hand, DC United is looking to capitalize off their late-season momentum last season and carry it into the next. The addition of Wayne Rooney mid-season sent them on a ten-game unbeaten streak, starting with a win over Atlanta, to qualify them for the playoffs. Unfortunately, they lost to Columbus in the first round, ending a miraculous comeback. Burgeoned on by this success and the addition of midfielder Lucas Rodriguez, the Black-And-Red are sure to be a strong team this season. A statement win at home to begin it would be a sure indicator they are ready to keep winning.

The game is at Audi Field in its second year as the Black-And-Red’s home field. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.
