DC United roll over the Rapids 4-2

DC United earned their 12th win of the year in dominating fashion over the Colorado Rapids tonight. DC United has now quadrupled their win total from last year’s campaign and are keeping pace quite well with defending Cup champions Sporting Kansas City.

DC United’s Luis Silva scored the lone goal of the first half in the twelfth minute with a solid shot from just inside the 18 yard box that slipped past Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin.

Colorado’s Dillon Serna drew the Rapids even in the 52nd minute with an unreal shot from at least 35 yards out. Taking the ball on one bounce, Serna blasted a high arcing shot that just cleared the outstretched arms of leaping DC United goalkeeper Bill Hamid to land in the right corner of the goal. Certainly, that blast by Serna will be on highlight reels for the rest of the year.

In the 67th minute Silva took advantage of some lax defending by the Rapids to slip in his second goal of the night and put DC United back in the lead. Chris Rolfe and Fabian Espindola would both add goals before the night was over to turn this game in to a blowout.

The Rapids would tally one more goal in stoppage time but by then there was no doubt all three points would be going to United. It was a good win for DC United and frankly, one that they really should have won easily. Colorado just is not as good as DC United at this point in the season and it is good that DC United did not suffer a slip up.

Wins over lesser teams cannot be taken for granted. DC played well tonight and the win puts them eight points clear of third place Toronto FC. DC is also now only two points back of top seeded Sporting KC, setting up an exciting match for the top seed when the two teams square off on Saturday August 23rd.
