DC United Begins Critical Homestand the Right Way, Rallies to Defeat Minnesota United FC 2-1

No better way to start a critical seven-game homestand. DC United continued their drive to the playoffs on Wednesday night at Audi Field with a 2-1 comeback win over Minnesota United FC. The win leapfrogs them past New England into the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference and now they trail Montreal by two points for the sixth and final playoff spot.

Both teams played to a scoreless first half.

Then the scoring barrage took place shortly after both teams emerged from the locker room after halftime. Minnesota United FC got on the board at the 47th minute with Angelo Rodriguez’s first MLS goal.

DC United ignited their comeback in the 65th minute when Ulises Segura, with his back to the goal, pivoted to his right around two defenders and narrowly beat Minnesota goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth to tie the game. For Segura, it was his second goal of the season.

The home team took the lead in the 69th minute with Darren Mattocks’ 10th goal of the season. Joseph Mora came toward the goal from the side and quickly fed a hustling Mattocks.

DC United will welcome the New York Red Bulls this Sunday September 16 to Audi Field this Sunday as the home club looks to avenge a late-August loss. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.
