DC United and New York Red Bulls Play to 3-3 Draw

DC United continued their push toward the MLS Playoffs on Sunday afternoon at Audi Field. While they came into the afternoon with the goal of earning themselves three points to get closer to the playoff picture they only came away with one as they played to a 3-3 draw. A hat trick by Bradley Wright-Phillips and some missed opportunities from Wayne Rooney were the difference.

DC United took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute with a goal from Paul Arriola off a great pass from Luciano Acosta. It was Arriolta’s fifth goal of the season.

The Red Bulls tied it before the half at the 41st minute with a goal from Bradley Wright-Phillips. The home team jumped back in front with a goal from Wayne Rooney in the 64th minute. It was Rooney’s fifth goal with United.

New York tied it back up in the 76th minute with Wright-Phillips’ second goal of the game. Acosta answered in the 87th minute for his second goal of the game to give DC United the 3-2 lead.

Then Wright-Phillips netted a hat trick to tie it right back up. Instead of DC United’s goal of three-points they only got one. They’re now three points behind Montreal for the sixth and final playoff spot with 36.

DC United will take a break from the fierce MLS competition and take part in a friendly this Wednesday night at Audi Field. They will host CD Olimpia. Kickoff is at 8:00 p.m. and you can watch the game online.
