D.C. United Get Statement Win Over Montreal, Inches Closer to Final Playoff Spot

When Audi Field was under construction just a block from home plate at Nationals Park in the revitalized Navy Yard neighborhood in Southeast, D.C., D.C. United and their fans who bled black and red had hope the new soccer stadium would serve as a fortress with the best homefield advantage in Major League Soccer. As the team got off to a slow start with a majority of their games on the road, which was in part due to allow the construction to be completed, they got hot when the stadium opened and are now right at the doorstep to the sixth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Saturday night, in the biggest game at Audi Field since opening night in mid-July, D.C. United shutout the sixth-place Montreal Impact by a final of 5-0. The win gives D.C. United three points and now pulls them to within two points of the final playoff spot.

The crowd brought the noise and the energy throughout the night.

D.C. United got on the board in the 17th minute with a goal from Luciano Acosta. On a give-n-go with Yamil Asad, Acosta got the ball and snuck it right off the left goal post. It was Acosta’s ninth goal of the season.

D.C. United led 1-0 at the half despite being outshot 9-3 but came out of the gates in the second half to get an insurance goal. In the 48th minute, Acosta found a streaking Wayne Rooney. Rooney used excellent footwork and kicked the ball past goalkeeper Evan Bush for his sixth goal of the season.

D.C. United added another one in the 61st minute. A no-look pass from Rooney led to a 2-on-1 rush, the one being Bush. Rooney’s pass went to Acosta who then found Paul Arriola for his sixth goal of the season.

How about another angle on that goal? Listen to this crowd!

Acosta and Arriola connected once again in the 78th minute. Then Rooney added his second goal of the game in the 82nd minute from downtown to make it 5-0. Bush was unlucky in a failed attempt to clear.

D.C. United continues their drive toward the playoffs on Sunday October 7th when the Chicago Fire come to Audi Field. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
