D.C. Gets 3 Goals, Gets 3 Points to Open Audi Field

Audi Field opened the right way tonight with a D.C. United win. The Black-and-Red beat Vancouver Whitecaps FC 3-1 in the stadium’s opener. Wayne Rooney also made his first appearance for D.C. United, coming on as a sub for Darren Mattocks in the 58th minute. D.C. United scored three goals, the first goal to be ever scored in the stadium was by Yamil Asad in the 27th minute. Asad, coincidentally, also scored the opening goal of the season for United in Orlando. The game would remain quiet until the 69th minute when Paul Arriola scored after getting past lazy defending by Marcel de Jong and Doneil Henry of Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Arriola scored again in the 80th minute with a fantastic shot that got past the goalkeeper Brian Rowe. Wayne Rooney had a few chances, his best one coming in the 84th minute, which was a header that was blocked away by Rowe.  The loan Whitecaps goal was scored by the 17-year old Canadian phenom Alphonso Davies, who scored in the last minute of stoppage. Overall, D.C. United got a win that they deserved, and were able to win it to start a great history and a great future at Audi Field. D.C. United now has 13 points, and their next game is on the road.

They will play in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, meaning they go against Yamil Asad’s former team, Atlanta United FC. Last time they played each other, Atlanta United FC broke the MLS single game attendance record, and D.C. United lost 3-1, with the loan goal in that game scored by Darren Mattocks.
