College Lacrosse: Towson is the new top team in Men’s Division I media polls

The Towson men’s lacrosse team has done nothing but surprise and amaze people in the community through the first month of the season. Shawn Nadelen’s team was placed in the lower tier of the media preseason rankings. Heck, most pundits didn’t even have Towson winning their first game of the season against cross-town rival Johns Hopkins on February 8th.

Ever since topping the Blue Jays at home with a whopping 17 points, the Tigers have been nothing but perfect since, going 4-0 and most importantly, knocking off the No.1 team last week, Loyola at home, 12-10.

Even heading into that game Towson was labeled the underdogs, primarily because the Tigers were facing the hottest player in the game that night in Pat Spencer. But the tough Towson defense and the unbelievable night goalie Tyler Canto had made Spencer not even a threat, only scoring one goal in the game.

With Towson idle over the weekend and a number of teams above them playing on Saturday and Sunday, the Tigers were still not a lock to be the new No.1. But with No.2 Maryland falling to Notre Dame, made it the decision a no-brainer for voters on Sunday night to place the Tigers as the nations new top team in men’s division I lacrosse.

As noted above this Towson team has been playing great, and that means on all fronts, offensively, defensively, goalie play, and at the faceoff position.

Senior faceoff specialist Alex Woodall went 20-for-26 in the win over Loyola and became the third player in program history with the most faceoff wins.

Brendan Sunday has been sensational on offense for Towson. Through four games he has 15 goals and 9 assists. Sunday was named Baltimore Sun Player of the Week after scoring four goals an assist against the Greyhounds. The rest of the offense has been explosive as well with guys like Grant Maloof, Zach Goodrich, Luke Fromert and Timmy Monahan producing points.

After unanimously being ranked number one by the three polls (USILA, Inside Lacrosse, and US Lacrosse), its safe to say everyone in the game feels that the Tigers are deserving of the top spot. Now the question is with everyone now believeing in Towson, can the Tigers sustain it?

We will see this week as Towson hits the road to take on Jacksonville (March 8) and new #2 Cornell (March 10) in Charlotte, N.C. for the Crown Lacrosse Event.
