College Basketball Preview: UMBC (13-9, 5-2) vs. Stony Brook (17-4, 5-1)

UMBC men’s basketball will take on the America East conference-leading Stony Brook Seawolves (17-4, 5-1) tomorrow night at the UMBC Event Center.  

The Retrievers (13-9, 5-2) are coming off a 59-51 victory against the New Hampshire Wildcats on Saturday afternoon.  Led by Junior guard K.J. Jackson with 21 points and graduate student forward Joe Sherburne with 14 points, UMBC weathered 16 turnovers to win their fourth in a row.

Sherburne leads the squad, averaging 14.4 points per contest with Jackson chipping in 11.4 points per game.  Their defense continues to shine, allowing just under 64 points per game.

Stony Brook is tied at the top of the America East conference standings with Vermont, to whom they lost to on Saturday, 73-52, as they struggled from the field in the second half.

Saturday notwithstanding, the Seawolves have had an outstanding season so far, and are led by redshirt junior guard Akwasi Yeboah who is averaging over 17 points per game.  Freshman guard Miles Latimer comes in at 11.6 ppg. 

Stony Brook’s signature win this season came on November 9th when they upended the South Carolina Gamecocks on the road, 83-81. 

The teams split their two meetings last season, with each winning on the road. The Seawolves lead the all-time series, 24-10, winning 19 of the past 21.

Tip –off tonight is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
