College Basketball Preview: UMBC (10-9, 2-2) vs. Albany (5-12, 0-3)

UMBC men’s basketball (10-9, 2-2) will face the Albany Great Danes (5-12, 0-3) on Saturday at the UMBC Event Center.  Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

The Retrievers defeated the Binghamton Bearcats (5-13, 1-2) at home on Wednesday evening, 68-49.   In that game, the Retrievers were led by a trio of players, including graduate student forward Joe Sherburne (15 points), junior forward Arkel Lamar (12 points) and junior guard K.J. Jackson (10 points).  On the other end of the floor UMBC flashed their conference-leading defense, holding the Bearcats to 41% shooting from the field.

Albany comes into the game having lost their last three games and four of their last five.  They have struggled to score this season, averaging just under 68 points per contest.  They are led by junior guard Ahmad Clark, from DeMatha High in Bowie, MD, who averages just over 18 points per game and redshirt freshman guard Cameron Healy who is averaging nearly 16 points per game.  No other Great Dane is averaging double-digit points.  Redshirt freshman forward Adam Lulka is pulling down seven rebounds per outing.

The Retrievers won, 68-60, on their home court last season which snapped an eight-game winning streak by the Great Danes in the series.  Albany leads the all-time series, 25-8.
