Mullins optioned, Wilkerson called up

The Baltimore Orioles made some roster moves on this beautiful Monday in Maryland, optioning struggling center fielder, Cedric Mullins, to Triple-A Norfolk and picking up Stevie Wilkerson’s contract to replace Mullins.

Cedric Mullins’ 2019 season thus far has been dreadful. Despite a pair of triples in a game in early April, Mullins has been able to do nothing at the plate. The former 2015 draft pick has a batting average of just .094, hitting safely in only 6 out of 64 at-bats.

The Orioles called up infielder Stevie Wilkerson, who has been playing his best recently at Triple-A Norfolk. This will be Wilkerson’s second stint at the major league level. In 49 plate appearances last season, he netted a batting average of .179.

Things are looking better for Wilkerson this year, holding a slash line of .316/.350/.456. Wilkerson has 10 RBIs in 15 games in Norfolk this season, including two home runs and a triple as part of his 18 hits thus far.

To make room on the 40-man roster, The Orioles designated relief pitcher, Josh Lucas, for assignment. Lucas has not exactly excelled in Baltimore this season, giving up four hits over 4.1 innings in three appearances, holding a 4.15 ERA.
