Ravens release Leach and McClain

351px-Jameel_McClain_2011_stadium_practiceThe Baltimore Ravens announced today that they have released veteran players Jameel McClain and Vonta Leach.  This is clearly a salary cap move as cutting both players will save the Ravens a significant amount of cap space.

I can see both McClain and Leach being brought back at cheaper contracts.  McClain battled a spinal injury and missed a lot of action but still played well when he came back last season.  McClain is a good team leader but linebackers have been found easily for the Ravens.

Leach is a bit tougher to bring back, he saw little action late last season and at age 32 he is not a young player.  Leach was released last year as well but brought back on a cheaper contract.

Here is the Ravens press release on the moves.

Ravens hire Gary Kubiak as offensive coordinator

Gary_Kubiak_in_2008The Baltimore Ravens have hired Gary Kubiak as their offensive coordinator.  The Ravens had the offensive coordinator position come open after Jim Caldwell was hired as the Detroit Lions head coach.  Kubiak brings with him Rick Dennison his former offensive coordinator to be the Ravens quarterback coach.

Kubiak is a great hiring for the Ravens has he is a very experienced coach.  Kubiak was the head coach of the Houston Texans for parts of eight seasons.  As a head coach Kubiak has a losing record at 61-64 in the regular season.

Kubiak was an offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos before getting hired by the Houston Texans.  Last season Kubiak had health scares but is only 52 years old and is in good health.

Ravens running back coach not returning

96px-Ray_Rice_2012The Baltimore Ravens announced Friday that their running back coach Wilbert Montgomery will not return for the 2014 season.  Many fingers can be pointed to coaches for the lack of a running game but I personally do not think that Montgomery was the problem.  The offensive line was the issue and failed to open up wholes for the running attack.

Ray Rice was also injured for most of the season which did contribute to the problem.  Montgomery is going to look to move up in the coaching ranks, he has proven to be a good coach.
