Orioles sign Drake

The Baltimore Orioles have signed pitcher Oliver Drake to a Major League contract, the club announced today.  Drake a former Navy Midshipman has pitched in the Minor Leagues for the Orioles.  Drake has most recently pitched for the Bowie Baysox.

Drake is a potential bullpen pitcher who can provide depth for the Orioles but I find his chances of making the Orioles out of spring training is unlikely.   Read more about Orioles sign Drake

Orioles make first round of callups

wpid-2014-08-01-17-46-27-1637083122.jpegThe Baltimore Orioles have started making their first round of September callups. Unlike past seasons the Orioles have only recalled veteran players that will add depth to the Orioles. The Orioles have recalled Kevin Gausman, who is starting today and Evan Meek. The Orioles have selected the contract of Joe Saunders and Kelly Johnson has reported to the club.

Meek and Saunders have both struggled this season but they will add depth to the bullpen. Saunders might get a start during the doubleheader with the New York Yankees. I would be very careful if I was the Orioles about starting Saunders, he has been hit around this season. Read more about Orioles make first round of callups

Orioles recall Paredes

The Baltimore Orioles have recalled infielder Jimmy Paredes after optioning Kevin Gausman last night.  The Orioles optioned Gausman as another “paper” move in preparation of the September roster expansion.

Paredes will add another infielder to the Orioles who can play third base and second base.  I do not see Paredes getting much playing time while the Orioles are in the playoff race.

The Baltimore Orioles have signed Joe Saunders to a minor league deal.  Saunders will head to Triple-A Norfolk and pitch as a reliever.  Saunders is 33 years old and has bounced around from team to team this season.

Saunders grew up an Orioles fan and helped the Orioles during the 2012 playoff run.  Saunders is from Virginia and will get to play in his home state for his favorite team.
