Capitals re-sign Orlov

The Washington Capitals have announced today that they have re-signed defenseman Dmitry Orlov to a two-year contract extension.  Orlov is only 22 years old and still has improvements to make but adds depth on the Caps defense.

Orlov is a puck mover on defense and has good offensive skills but he still needs to get better defensively.  I think keeping Orlov is a good low money move.  Orlov still needs to mature he is still very young.

Here is the Caps press release on Orlov.

Kuznetsov to make his Capitals debut tonight

256px-EvgenyKuznetsovEvgeny Kuznetsov is expected to make his Washington Capitals debut tonight, as announced by the Capitals twitter account.  Kuznetsov was drafted way back in 2010 and finally signed a deal with the Caps last week, that story can be found here.

I am not sure what line the Caps will put Kuznetsov for tonight’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins but if I were to guess it would be the third or fourth line.  Right now it looks like Kuznetsov will be on the Caps fourth line.  The Caps plan on easing Kuznetsov into NHL action.  No doubt Kuznetsov has the talent to become a top six forward.

Capitals agree to terms with Evgeny Kuznetsov

EvgenyKuznetsovThe Washington Capitals have finally agreed to terms with top prospect Evgeny Kuznetsov. Kuznetsov is expected to join the Capitals very soon and be inserted into the lineup right away.

Kuznetsov spent this season playing in the KHL this season. The Capitals do not lack offense but adding Kuznetsov surely will not hurt.  If the Capitals fall out of the playoff race getting Kuznetsov NHL experience now will surely not them for the future.

Two fights in one Tom Wilson versus Luke Schenn and John Erskine versus Vincent Lecavalier

ERI_5308_(5502687657)This was a mess, the Philideplhia Flyers came out playing dirty and this is where it got too heated. The first fight Tom Wilson faces off against Luke Schenn after a hit on a Washington Capitals player. Schenn was tangeled up and Wilson had a chance to really put a hurting on him but waited. Schenn got a really good punch in but it did not seem to phase Wilson that much. I am calling this fight a draw, it was a classy move by Wilson to not throw a punch while Schenn was down, Schenn probably would not have held up in that situation.

Capitals acquire Halak trade Neuvirth and Klesla

445px-Michal_neuvirthThe Washington Capitals have acquired Jarolsav Halak from the Buffalo Sabres. The Caps also get a third-round pick in the 2015 draft. The Caps are sending Michal Neuvirth and Rostislav Klesla to the Sabres. Klesla was acquired yesterday in this transaction.

The Caps need a goalie and Halak may be the player the they are looking for to fill in that role.  Halak has a 2.23 goals-against average which is very good.

Neuvirth has played well at times for the Caps but has dropped on the depth chart this season.

The extra draft pick is also good for the Caps who need to keep an eye towards the future.  In recent years they have traded away draft picks to make deadline deals.

Capitals finally trade Erat

Rostislav Klesla

The Washington Capitals finally traded forward Martin Erat in a four-player deal with the Phoenix Coyotes. Erat has been requesting a trade for a long time. Remember last year I said that the Caps were making a bad deal when they got Erat, I was right.

The Caps will get Chris Brown and Rostislav Klesla for Erat and John Mitchell. the Caps also get a fourth-round draft pick in the 2015 draft.  Brown is a 23-year old forward who looks to have some scoring potential.  Klesla will add depth to the Caps defense.

Erat only scored one goal for the Caps this year and has been a vocal distraction.  Erat’s heart was clearly not with the Caps so it is good to see him go.
