Capitals Rebound with 5-2 Win Over Pens

The Capitals played very well for most of Thursday night’s game. Their overall performance was a great effort and got the team another win. The Caps are 4-1-1 in their last 6 and for the most part, are playing pretty solid hockey.

Nicklas Backstrom got the Capitals on the board in the first period, his ninth on the year. T.J. Oshie also recorded a goal on a beautiful diving effort early in the third, his third goal in the last 3 games. This was followed by a Tanev shorthanded goal and then Guentzel tied it 3 minutes later. A blown two goal lead had a lot of Caps fans worried but in the end, it would not matter.

Tom Wilson scored on the power play for the caps with about 8 minutes to go in the third, his 7th on the year. Then, Hagelin and Eller both recorded empty net goals for the Caps, sealing the victory. John Carlson recorded an assist tonight, and is second on the team in that category, extending his point streak to 3 games. Vitek Vanecek played well once again saving 26 shots for a .928 save percentage. He’s been a real bright spot for this team and now has 8 wins on the year.

The Capitals out shot the Penguins 35-28 in the game which was a major improvement from Tuesday’s loss. Another improvement was the Caps success in the face-off circle where they won over 61% of the draws. The penalty kill also looked great, killing all four of their penalties leaving Pittsburgh 0-4 on the power play.

At the end of the night, the Capitals played pretty good hockey for 60 minutes. Although they slipped up in the third, blowing a 2 goal lead, they found a way to win and grab a huge 2 points.

The Caps will be back in action on Saturday in New Jersey against the Devils.
