Capitals Fall to Rangers Following Five Unanswered Goals

The Washington Capitals have struggled so far this season against the New York Rangers. Coming into the game Tuesday night, the Capitals were 2-3-0 against them this year. The Caps started the game off hot, scoring two goals in the first five minutes. Things got a bit sloppy from there and the Rangers capitalized on mistakes to put the game away.

Only 2:23 into the game, T.J. Oshie scored a power play goal for the Caps, his ninth on the year. Just under two minutes later, Nic Dowd added another, his seventh on the year. The Capitals came out of the gates flying around and dominating with the puck.

Unfortunately for them, the Rangers did not go away. New York converted on a breakaway chance to make it 2-1 late in the first. An uneventful second period had the Capitals leading 2-1 after two. In the third, the story was different. The Rangers scored early and often. They tallied four total goals in the third, including an empty netter. A total of five unanswered goals from the Rangers simply shocked the Capitals.

This was the Capitals fourth game in the last six days and the loss moved them to 15-3-1 in their last 19 games. Currently, they sit atop the Eastern division and tied for the NHL lead in points (50). The Capitals had a fantastic month of March however, going 11-3-0. Out of a possible 28 points, the Capitals took 22, which propelled them to the top of the league standings.

The Capitals next game is a marquee matchup with the New York Islanders. The Islanders are in second place right now, two points behind the Capitals. That game will be played Thursday night (4/1) in New York.
