Capitals fall to Rangers 3-1

The Washington Capitals suffered a 3-1 defeat Saturday night to put an end to their seven game win streak. The Capitals were slow for most of the game and could not convert on their chances. The Rangers on the other hand had the edge and were able to come out on top.

For the second straight night, the New York Rangers tallied a goal in the first period and took that 1-0 led into the third. John Carlson was able to tie it up late in the third. The goal was Carlson’s seventh on the year. Carlson is now two goals shy of passing Mike Green and Calle Johansson for third most goals by a defenseman in franchise history. Tom Wilson recorded the primary assist on the Carlson goal, his first point in his first game back following his suspension.

In net for the Capitals tonight was Ilya Samsonov. Samsonov saved 22 shots for a save percentage of .917. He played well, but unfortunately, a late turnover by Brendan Dillon led to the game winning goal from Mika Zibanejad. This marked the first regulation loss of the season for Samsonov. He now sits at 6-1-1 in net this year.

The loss should not affect the Capitals too much as of right now. They have still been playing great hockey and are still in first place in the Eastern Division. In their last 13 games, they are 11-2-0. Washington will have a few days of much needed rest before their next game.

The Capitals will play again on Thursday (3/25) at Capital One Arena against the Devils.
