Capitals fall to Islanders 8-4

The Washington Capitals lost for the second time in two games, this time at the hands of the New York Islanders.

The game started with a collision 30 seconds in between T.J. Oshie and Ilya Samsonov. Samsonov dropped to the ice and had to go back into the locker room. Vitek Vanecek came into the game and allowed three goals before Samsonov returned late in the first.

The Capitals scored early with a goal from John Carlson. That would be his first of two on the night. The Islanders responded with three goals of their own. Then Daniel Sprong tallied his seventh of the year. Following Sprong’s goal, the Islanders scored two more to go up 5-2. Oshie then tipped in a power play goal to cut the lead to 5-3.

After cutting the lead to two, the Islanders scored their sixth goal of the game. Carlson then responded with his second of the night. Carlson has now passed Calle Johansson and Mike Green for third most goals by a defenseman in franchise history with 114 career goals.

The Islanders ended up scoring eight on the night, behind a hat trick from Matt Barzal. Although the Capitals have lost two in a row in blowout fashion, they are still one of the top teams in the league. Currently, they are tied for first with the Penguins and Islanders with 50 points, but the Capitals do have a game in hand.

Washington will be back in action again tomorrow night in New Jersey looking to get back in the win column.
