Capitals fall to Islanders 1-0

Washington, coming off of two wins against the Devils, came into a hot matchup with the Islanders. In the previous game against the Islanders, the Capitals were completely dominated and lost 8-4. They played a much better game than that tonight but could not convert offensively.

The Capitals goalie tonight was Vitek Vanecek. Once again, he played fantastic. Vanecek saved 38 shots from the Islanders and only allowed one goal. He gave the Capitals a chance to win and it is a shame that they could not convert. His counterpart, Semyon Varlamov, saved all 29 shots from the Capitals to shut them out. Both of the goalies were fantastic, and both were in the top three stars of the game.

Although the Capitals played significantly better than they did last week when they played the Islanders, there could still be improvements. The Islanders had 10 more shots than the Capitals and out hit them, 32-26. The Islanders simply had more chances and that ended up being the difference in the game.

Peter Laviolette shook up the lineup once again tonight. He swapped Richard Panik and Jakub Vrana, making Panik the healthy scratch. The Capitals have been looking for more production out of the two of them, but that unfortunately did not happen tonight.

With the loss, the Capitals and Islanders are now tied for the top spot in the Eastern Division, both at 25-10-4. The Capitals have a big stretch coming up as they play the Bruins three times and the Flyers and Sabres two times in the next seven. Then they matchup with the Islanders again three straight times.

The Capitals will be back in action again on Thursday (4/8) against the Bruins in Washington looking to bounce back.
