Capitals Beat Sabres 4-3

The Washington Capitals came into the game Friday night having lost four of their last six games. One of the things that they needed to work on, was their starts. When scoring first this season, the Capitals are 16-5-2 and added another to that tally tonight.

Brenden Dillon opened the scoring for the Capitals under three minutes in with a shot from the point. It was only Dillon’s second goal of the season. Later in the first, Alex Ovechkin tallied his 21st of the year. The goal was Ovechkin’s 727th career goal. He is now five goals shy of passing Marcel Dionne for fifth all-time. The Sabres however, were able to grab a goal at the end of the first making it 2-1.

28 seconds into the second period Justin Schultz scored his third of the season, putting the Capitals up 3-1. Schultz recorded three points on the night with a goal and two assists. Then, the Sabres were able to tally another halfway through the second to bring the game to 3-2.

Halfway through the third, Jakub Vrana recorded his 11th goal of the season, putting the Caps up 4-2. They have been needing him to be more productive offensively, so hopefully this begins a good trend. The Sabres recorded another goal late in the third to bring it to 4-3, but Washington was able to hold on.

Vitek Vanecek was good in net again for the Capitals. He recorded his 16th win of the year which leads all rookie goaltenders. In his last three games, he has saved 90 of the 95 shots that he has faced, good for a .947 save percentage.

Washington moved into a tie for first place in the Eastern division with the win. Hopefully this win can help build some momentum and get on another roll here soon.

The Capitals will be back in action again on Sunday night (4/11) in Boston against the Bruins.
