Capitals Beat Devils for Second Straight Night

The Washington Capitals faced off against the New Jersey Devils for the second straight night. Similar to last night, the Capitals offense provided four goals. In the crease, Ilya Samsonov dominated as the Capitals won 4-0.

The captain, Alex Ovechkin, put the Caps up early with career goal number 722. Evgeny Kuznetsov provided the feed, his tenth point in the last ten games. Later in the first, Nicklas Backstrom added another for the Capitals, his 13th of the year. Backstrom already has surpassed his goal total from last season (12).

In the third, Conor Sheary scored to put the Caps up 3-0. The goal was Sheary’s seventh on the year. Tom Wilson assisted on Sheary’s goal and Backstrom’s goal. This marked Wilson’s eighth career multi-assist game. With just over three minutes left in the third, Ovechkin added another goal. It was his second goal of the game and career number 723. Ovechkin’s 17 goals leads the team this season.

Ilya Samsonov was dominant in net for the Capitals tonight. He earned his first shutout of the season as he saved all 23 of the Devils shots. This was Samsonov’s second career shutout. His first career shutout came last season against the Carolina Hurricanes.

With the win over the Devils, the Capitals moved into first place in the Eastern Division. Currently, they sit at 22-7-4 with 48 points. Washington will be back in action again on Sunday (3/28) at 12pm against the Rangers. That game will be the first of a home-and-home series with New York.
