At the height of the free agent scuffle, the Washington Capitals have signed Garnet Hathaway to a four-year, $6 million deal. The 27-year-old winger from Maine played with the Calgary Flames last season where he was part of a Pacific Division winning team. Since he is young and prominent, his skills will be appreciated in Washington

Hathaway joined the league in 2015 after four years playing at Brown University. Last year, he led the team in hits (200) and had a career best 11 goals and 19 points. As he at last got to play a full season, Hathaway branched into his own and was able to play well as the team rode into the playoffs. This signing makes up for the loss of Brett Connolly, who signed with the Panthers on Sunday. Hathaway signed with the Caps the same day as Richard Panik from Phoenix. Panik is expected to be on the line above him next season.

Hathaway is expected to add life to the Capitals offense next season. Since he got better last season, this acquisition makes for a strong piece to the team going forward. It will be interesting to see what he does with the fast, effective team.
