Can the Capitals bounce back after two straight regulation losses? A preview of Caps/Flyers

This is a rare mid day matinee for the Capitals. They welcome the Flyers to town amid a two game losing streak. Lets take a look at what has brought the Caps down after a very hot start.

This is becoming a recurring theme in the game previews, but penalties are absolutely terrible right now. The team took five penalties in the game against the Rangers which is horrendous. A few of these were taken when the Caps were in the offensive zone and getting the puck in deep and setting up plays. The team needs to be way more disciplined and not take as many penalties.

On top of penalties, the team is being outshot early because the defense is very mediocre right now. They blocked 9 shots compared to New Yorks 18. There is a certain lack of hustle and energy being shown. Look for head coach Peter Laviolette to try to ignite a fire under the defense. One thing that could be plaguing the team is the star power on the defensive side. Having stars such as Chara, Carlson, Orlov, ect on the back end, could lead to one player thinking if i get beat then this star is back with me.

Now, to take a look at some of the good things the team is doing. Vitek Vanechek is doing a phenomanal job as goaltender. He has a save percentage of 0.911 through the first 9 games. He also boasts a 2.95 goal against average which for a rookie goaltender who was thrust into the starting goaltender position is superb. In 9 games, he has only allowed 27 goals total. His play is one reason why the Caps are started hot.

The penalty kill has been really good as well. The PK has been a big part in why the team is in games despite taking a lot of penalties. This is good news especially if it can stay hot like this.

The game is at 12 pm on NBC or you can listen on 106.7 fm
