Bowie State Wins Thriller, Edges Winston Salem State 20-17

The Bowie State Bulldogs kept their winning streak alive by the skin of their teeth in their home opener this weekend against the Winston Salem State Rams at Bulldog Stadium in Bowie, MD.

Winston Salem State scored the first points of the game after a blocked punt and a 3 yard touchdown run by Kerrion Moore. Bowie State edged closer on a safety and a 22 yard field goal. The Bulldogs trailed 7-5 at halftime. Winston Salem State scored on the opening possession of the second half with a 10 yard touchdown pass from Emiere Scaffe to Darren Dowdell to give the Rams a 14-5 lead. This is when Bowie State’s offense started to click, as the Bulldogs answered with a two yard touchdown run to draw back to within 2 at 14-12. After a Winston Salem State field goal, the score was 17-12 in favor of the Rams. Bowie State’s offense had plenty of chances in the fourth, but could not seem to convert. Luckily, the defense held Winston Salem State in check, not allowing a single fourth quarter point. This sets the stage for the final drive. Senior quarterback Amir Hall led the Bulldogs on an 81 yard drive capped off with a 30 yard touchdown pass to Alana Sesay to give the Bulldogs their first lead at 18-17 with 1:14 remaining in the game. Bowie State converted the two point conversion, and the defense made one last stop, capping it off with an interception on the final play for a 20-17 Bulldogs victory-their fourth in a row-to improve their record to 4-1, 2-0 CIAA and keep the Bulldogs atop the CIAA’s Northern division.

Bulldogs will head to Murfreesboro, NC to face Chowan next week.
