Bowie Baysox Weekly Recap 8/7-8/22

The Bowie Baysox begin the week with a 51-60 record, 9 games below .500 with just a couple weeks left in the season. Game by game it is getting harder and harder for the Baysox to come back in the standings as the season will be coming to a close very soon, here is a recap from each game in the last couple weeks:

Game 1: 8/7/18: Fisher Cats 8 Baysox 3

Brian Gonzalez lasted a long time but still gave up 7 runs, he went 5.2 innings, allowing 7 runs, and striking out 2. I think he probably stayed in just to give the bullpen some rest and for Gonzalez to pitch through adversity and pressure because that will be useful tool when he becomes a major league pitcher one day hopefully. Chris Lee is beginning to ease back into a regular work load, looking solid, Lee threw 2.1 scoreless innings, Jay Flaa also was solid but allowed an unearned run in his inning of work. The only RBI off of a hit of the day from the Baysox was Ryan Mountcastle’s single he also hit a sacrifice fly to score a run. Another run coming in from a wild pitch.

Game 2: 8/8/18: Fisher Cats 6 Baysox 13

Keegan Akin Just barely falls short of the quality start, pitching 6 innings, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) but still not a terrible start, Chleborad and Grimes allowed a run each. It was quite the day for the offense, every starter finished with at least a hit. Craig Gentry rehabbing finished with 3 hits, Aderlin Rodriguez,Anderson Feliz, and Erick Salecedo also finished with 3 hits. Austin Hays, hopefully healthy again returns to the lineup and I think is returning to his 2017 form, finishing with 2 hits. The RBI leaders were Feliz with 6 followed by Rodriguez with 3. Feliz, Rodriguez, and newly acquired Brett Cumberland homered for his first in the Orioles organization.

Game 3: 8/9/18: Fisher Cats 7 Baysox 2

Dean Kremer pitches to what should have been a quality start, instead is charged with the loss due to a couple unearned runs. The final line for Kremer: 6 innings, 4 runs (2 earned), 9 strikeouts. Zach Pop allowed 2 runs himself and Luis Ysla allowed a run also. Craig Gentry and Martin Cervenka both finished with 2 hits, the only runs coming off Rodriguez’s sacrifice fly and Austin Hays’ ground out.

Game 4: 8/10/18: Baysox 7 Yard Goats 5

Dillon Tate had an interesting start, allowing 4 runs in the 1st inning but still managed to go a full 6 innings, he allowed 5 total. Jay Flaa and Branden Kline combined for 3 scoreless innings. Aderlin Rodriguez and Ryan Mountcastle combined for the majority of the RBIs with 2 each. Rodriguez, Diaz, and Joseph each finished with 2 hits. Mountcastle and Cervenka hit their 12th and 13th homers of the year respectively.

Game 5: 8/12/18: Baysox 3 Yard Goats 1 Final/6

In a rain shortened game, newly acquired Bruce Zimmerman (acquired in Gausman trade) technically pitches a complete game, in a rain shortened game, Zimmerman pitched 5 innings while only allowing 1 run, while also striking out 5. Hartford out-hit the Baysox who only had 3 hits has a team and still won the game. Aderlin Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly, Feliz singled in a run, and Bannon hit another sacrifice fly out. With all the action coming in the first inning, Zimmerman and the Baysox were still able to maintain the lead for the rest of the game.

Game 6: 8/14/18: Flying Squirrels 2 Baysox 10 Final/7

Keegan Akin was great tonight going 5.2 innings, allowing 2 runs, and striking out 7 batters. Zach Pop followed by successfully pitching 1.1 scoreless innings to maintain the lead. Austin Hays led the way with 3 hits and 4 RBIs. Hays homered and doubled. Joseph, Mountcastle, and McKenna also had multiple hits.

Game 7: 8/15/18: Flying Squirrels 8

Baysox 5 Final/8

Matthew Grimes started off, going 2 innings, allowing 3 runs, Chris Lee followed, going 3 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned), Jay Flaa pitches a scoreless inning, Kline threw a scoreless inning, and Chleborad was charged with the loss after allowing 3 unearned runs. Yusniel Diaz and Aderlin Rodriguez both homered. It was Rodriguez’s 20th of the year. Rodriguez, Mountcastle, and Joseph all had multiple hits.

Game 8: 8/15/18: Flying Squirrels 4 Baysox 10

Brian Gonzalez falls just barely short of a quality start, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing 3 runs, Gonzalez was credited with the win. Zach Muckenhirn was given the save after pitching 3.1 innings, allowing a run. McKenna looks like he is starting to heat up after finishing with 3 hits today, Mountcastle and Rodriguez both stay red hot and finish with 3 hits also.

Game 9: 8/16/18: Flying Squirrels 6 Baysox 3

Dean Kremer goes 5.1 innings, allowing 4 runs, Kremer just couldn’t seem to get in a groove today but still not a terrible start. Chleborad and Kelly were in relief, allowing 1 unearned run and 1 earned run respectively. The Baysox finished with just 3 hits, 2 from Salcedo and a hit from Rodriguez. RBIs being credited to Rodriguez, Mountcastle, and Salcedo.

Game 10: 8/17/18: Baysox 6 Seawolves 4

Dillon Tate got the ball, Tate finished going 5.1 innings and allowing 4 runs. Lee and Pop combined for 3 scoreless innings. Austin Hays led in a big way, going a perfect 4 for 4 with 3 RBIs. Just as Austin Hays is returning to form, Yusniel Diaz is returning to his top prospect status slowly but surely, Diaz finished with 2 hits.

Game 11: 8/18/18: Baysox 2 SeaWolves 3

Bruce Zimmerman stays solid going 5 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned), Muckenhirn threw 2 scoreless, and Flaa allowed a run. It was very quiet at the bottom of the order and really at the top, the main production in the hitting department, came from Anderson Feliz who went 4 for 4 in a perfect day for him. Rodriguez finished with 2 hits but unfortunately the rest of the team could not get it together. Felix singled in 2 runs.

Game 12: 8/19/18: Baysox 3 Seawolves 1

Keegan Akin was straight dominant tonight, he goes 6.2 scoreless innings, only allowing 4 hits, with 6 strikeouts. Chris Lee threw 1.1 scoreless innings and Kline allowed a run but still earned his 12th save of the year for Bowie. The difference for Bowie was Yusniel Diaz’s 3-Run homer to lead the Baysox to victory, the power is starting to show, scouts are saying that he is starting to use his lower body, which generates more power. Red hot Rodriguez finished with 2 hits himself.

Game 13: 8/20/18: Baysox 6 Flying Squirrels 2

Very solid offensive day with several players with multiple hits. Rehebbing Steve Wilkerson with 3, McKenna with 2, Joseph with 3, Diaz with 2, and Salcedo with 2. Corban Joseph and Yusniel Diaz each finished with 3 RBIs. Diaz hit another 3-run homer, his 3rd 3-run homer in the last few days. Hopefully this is a sign of what’s to come for Diaz as he looks to be a centerpiece of the Orioles rebuild. On the pitching side of things, Brian Gonzalez was solid, going 6 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned). Grimes and Pop combined for 3 scoreless. It was a great game all around for the Baysox.

Game 14: 8/21/18: Baysox 5 Flying Squirrels 0

What a day for the pitching staff… Dean Kremer kicks things off with 6 scoreless innings, striking out 6 and allowing 3 hits. The bullpen, consisting of Lee and Flaa combined for 3 scoreless innings. Offensively, Bannon and Joseph finished with multiple hits, hopefully a sign of life for Bannon as he’s been very cold since his trade to the Orioles. A lot of the runs came from sacrifice fly outs, ground outs, and wild pitches, but other than that Corban Joseph singled in a run.

It was a decent stretch for the Baysox but if they want to play in the playoffs they have to be more consistent, the clock is ticking, they have to work fast.
