Baltimore Orioles versus Tampa Bay Rays recap 2/26/2019

The Baltimore Orioles hosted the Tampa Bay Rays this afternoon at Ed Smith Stadium in sunny Sarasota, Florida.

Mike Wright Jr. took the mound for the Orioles in his first start of the spring, opposite of Emilio Pagan for the Rays. Wright hurled a solid two scoreless innings giving up two hits with one strike out and one walk.

The Orioles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the home half of the second inning off of a wild pitch by Rays starter Emilio Pagan that scored Alcides Escobar from third. That was followed shortly by a sacrifice fly that scored Joey Rickard.

Twenty-Four year old Josh Rogers, who was acquired in the Zach Britton trade with the New York Yankees last July, threw two innings in relief, giving up no runs off one hit and one walk.

The Tampa Bay Rays second baseman, Brandon Lowe, got on the board from a RBI double in the fifth inning off of Orioles pitcher Chris Lee. Lee worked one inning giving up one run off of two hits in his first action this spring.

Tampa Bay’s offense showed up in the opening half of the eight inning, after two shutdown innings by Orioles pitcher Yefry Ramirez. The Rays scored ten runs in the eighth off of ten hits given up collectively by pitchers John Means, Jay Flaa and Taylor Grover, to run away with this game.

Jalen Beeks picked up the win for the Rays (1-0) while Jay Flaa recorded the loss for the Orioles (0-1).

The Baltimore Orioles return to the field Wednesday, February 27th, visiting the defending champion Boston RedSox at JetBlue Park
