Anibal Sanchez throws near-complete game as Nationals open Players Weekend with a 9-3 win; recap 8/23/2019

The Washington Nationals kicked off Players’ Weekend with a 9-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, giving the team a 71-57 record. Anibal Sanchez (Alejo) threw 8.1 fantastic innings with getting only two runs (one unearned) on one hit as well as two walks and six strikeouts. Matt Grace (Gracey) relieved Sanchez in the ninth and gave up one run on two hits.

In the first inning, Adam Eaton (Spanky) hit a solo home run on a line drive to right center field. In the third, Trea Turner (T3) got out on a sacrifice fly that scored Victor Robles (Vic). In the fourth, Kurt Suzuki (Zuk) hit an RBI single to score Juan Soto (Soto Pachecho), and then Sanchez hit an RBI single bunt to score Suzuki. In the fifth, Anthony Rendon (Ant) scored on a wild pitch by Pedro Strop, and then Robles hit a2-RBI double to score Soto and Suzuki. In the seventh, Soto hit a solo home run, and in the ninth, Howie Kendrick (Truck) hit an RBI double to score Soto.

Tomorrow, Joe Ross (JR) will take on Jose Quintana for the second game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 2:20 p.m. ET.
