Ravens release Dumervil

refer to captionThe Baltimore Ravens have released outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil to free up some salary cap space.  Dumervil was set to have a high salary cap number but the Ravens are leaving the door open for Dumervil to return.  At 33 years old Dumervil has seen his production drop due to injuries.

Last season Dumervil only played in eight games and recorded just three sacks, which is low for him.  Dumervil’s best season for the Ravens came in 2014 when he recorded 17 sacks.  The Ravens like Dumervil and I could see Dumervil returning at a lower contract.  Right now the Ravens will save about $6 million in salary cap space from releasing Dumervil.

When healthy Dumervil is a great player and the Ravens should try to keep him.  Dumervil is a solid leader and works well with Terrell Suggs.

Here is the Ravens press release on Dumervil.

The Baltimore Ravens terminated the contract of vested veteran OLB Elvis Dumervil, general manager and executive vice president Ozzie Newsome announced Wednesday.

In four seasons (2013-16) as a Raven, the 11-year veteran registered 125 tackles, 35.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries in 55 games (24 starts).

“Elvis Dumervil has been a leader for us on and off the field,” Newsome stated. “He has made a positive impression on our franchise, and we have been fortunate to have him as a Raven. We respect his professionalism and the way he plays the game, in addition to his extensive charitable efforts that have greatly impacted our Baltimore community and his parents’ native country of Haiti.

“We have not closed the door on the possibility of him returning in the future.”

Missing eight games in 2016 while rehabbing a foot/ankle injury, Dumervil posted 11 tackles, three sacks, nine quarterback hits, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery for the Ravens’ seventh-ranked defense (322.1 ypg allowed).

In 2014, Dumervil set a Baltimore single-season franchise-record with 17 sacks (the NFL’s third most that year), while in 2015, he registered six sacks. (Both seasons yielded Pro Bowl honors for Dumervil, who has earned five All-Star nods during his career.)

Dumervil also set the Ravens’ single-season record with a career-high 127.5 sack yards in 2014, tallying a figure that ranked second in the league. During that 2014 campaign, Dumervil (17) and OLB Terrell Suggs (12) combined to produce the most sacks (29) among any NFL duo.

In 146 career games, Dumervil has produced 389 tackles, 99 sacks, 24 forced fumbles, 13 fumble recoveries and one interception.
