Watch Out World: Maryland Upends Florida State for 11th Straight Win

Over the past two days, Maryland baseball has sent a message to the rest of the college baseball world: “Watch out for the Terps.” After beating UVA yesterday, Mike Shawaryn threw a gem, and the Terps upset Florida State 5-3. If Virginia beats North Carolina tonight, the Terps will advance to the ACC title game on Sunday afternoon.

Shawaryn continued his fabulous freshman year with his Maryland-record 10th win of the season. He threw seven shutout innings against a talented Florida State offense. The Seminoles only managed two hits against Shawaryn.

Offensively, slugger Jose Cuas led the Maryland attack with 3 RBIs, including a big 2-RBI bases loaded double. The Terps clung to a 5-0 when Shawaryn exited. Florida State then mounted a rally in the eighth. Ben Brewster issued a leadoff walk, and Bobby Ruse struggled, allowing Brewster’s runner and one of his own to score. Brewster and Ruse allowed a combined three runs without recording an out, but closer Kevin Mooney saved the day again. Mooney worked out of the bases loaded jam in the eighth, and he also pitched a perfect ninth to record his second save in as many days.

Maryland plays UNC tomorrow in their final Group B contest. If the UVA beats the Tar Heels tonight, Maryland will play for the ACC crown regardless of tomorrow’s result. If UNC wins tonight, a Maryland win tomorrow will put the Terps in the ACC Championship. If tomorrow’s game is a must-win game, Jake Drossner will probably take the mound. If not, the Terps will probably turn to Tayler Stiles tomorrow and Drossner will pitch on Sunday.

Maryland has now won 11 straight, and the Terps still have not lost in May.
