Orioles Minor League Players of the Week: Michael Burgess & Parker Bridwell

Frederick Keys outfielder Michael Burgess was on fire for the week of May 12-18. The 25-year-old posted a .423 batting average (going 11 for 26), scored 5 runs, hit 4 doubles, a home run, and collected an astounding 11 RBIs in the week.

While he may not be a household name for Baltimore Orioles fans, Burgess was selected in the first round of the 2007 draft (49th pick overall) by the Washington Nationals. After spending four years in the Nationals organization, Burgess moved on to the Chicago Cubs, then the Houston Astros, before signing a minor league deal with the Orioles back in February.

The strong-armed outfielder was previously ranked as the Nationals #4 prospect after the 2007 and 2008 seasons by Baseball America. So far this season for the Keys Burgess has hit .279 with 16 runs, 13 doubles, 4 HRs, and 31 RBIs in 38 games.

Fellow Keys teammate Parker Bridwell also contributed nicely this past week. Bridwell, a former 9th round draft pick by the Orioles in the 2010 draft, took a no-hitter into the ninth inning last Tuesday night against the Potomac Nationals.

The right-hander retired the first 16 batters he faced in the game, but gave up a single to center field in the final inning. On the night, Bridwell threw 8 1/3 innings, gave up 1 hit, 0 ER, 2 walks, 8 K’s, and recorded the win. Bridwell was named as the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week.

Bridwell was ranked as the Orioles #19 prospect following the 2013 season by Baseball America.
