Machado to be activated tonight (if there is a game)

479px-Manny_Machado_8-10-2012The Baltimore Orioles plan to activate Manny Machado tonight and start him at third base, according to Brittany Ghiroli.  Machado has been on the disabled list the entire season and has recently had a very success rehab assignment with the Frederick Keys.  Machado had a .667 batting average, four doubles and one triple with the Keys.

The weather looks questionable in Baltimore and if there is not a game then Machado will remain on the disabled list.

Here is Ghiroli’s tweet about Machado.

Player Profiles: Tanner Roark

Tanner Roark
Tanner Roark

Coming off a complete game shutout on April 26 against the San Diego Padres, Tanner Roark thrust himself into the spotlight and into what looks like the permanent starting rotation for the Washington Nationals. But it wasn’t all such a bright future for the 27 year old right hander.

Born on October 5, 1986 in Wilmington, Illinois, Tanner’s sports career started when he played one season with the Southern Illinois Miners of the independent Frontier League for the 2008 season. To say the least he struggled, in just three games he pitched 9 2/3 innings while giving up 23 hits as well as 25 runs, which comes to an astounding ERA of 21.41.
Even with his dreadful start for the Miners he would be drafted in the 25th round of the 2008 Amateur Player Draft by the Texas Rangers. Then in July 2010 he was traded to the Nationals for Cristian Guzman, Guzman was traded due to the arrival of the now starting shortstop Ian Desmond. Read more about Player Profiles: Tanner Roark

The Washington Redskins have a lot of needs heading into the draft, and will likely use a best player available approach to this May’s draft. The Redskins could go a number of different directions with the 34th pick. You could make an argument for the Skins drafting the offensive line, defensive line, linebacker, or secondary position.

Harper lands on DL, again

1024px-9TH_Bryce_HarperWell the worst has come true for Washington National faithful, Bryce Harper will for the first time this season be placed on the disable list due to his need of surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb and he is expected to be out until at least early July, ESPN’s Keith Law reports.

Harper suffered the injury on a head first slide into third base after a base clearing triple on April 25 against the San Diego Padres, the Nationals would go on to win the game 11-1. At the time of the injury the severity of it was unknown with Harper showing little to no discomfort after the play. But after seeing multiple doctors he and the Nationals elected to have the surgery on Tuesday, April 29, to repair the thumb.

Harper will go the DL currently batting .289, highest of career, with one home run and nine runs batted in. This will be the second season in a row Harper will miss significant amount of time due to injuries, after missing 44 games last season to an array of injuries it was heavily discussed what a healthy Harper could do this year and how he could help many experts prediction of the Nationals winning the World Series come true. This injury will definitely set the Nationals back offensively and defensively, which is already  worst in the MLB.

Orioles Prospect of the Week: Dariel Alvarez

Every Monday I will be focusing on a Baltimore Orioles minor league standout player for the previous week. Today we will take a look at Bowie Baysox outfielder Dariel Alvarez. Featuring in five games for the AA outfit this past week, Alvarez hit .480 while racking up an impressive 12 hits, seven RBIs, seven runs, two Home runs, and only striking out once.

The 25-year-old Alvarez was signed last summer by the Orioles, receiving an $800,000 signing bonus (about $20,000 more than fellow Cuban outfielder Henry Urrutia received from the team).

23 straight wins over KC: And series review

It’s so odd.

The 1969 Royals of Kansas City Royals were an expansion team. Naturally, the Royals didn’t win 70 games that season. That was also the year in which the Orioles won 109 contests and blitzed through the American League. Bob Oliver led the Royals with 14 homers. In fairness, the O’s had only four players who hit more than 14 homers, led by Boog Powell’s 37.

Player Profiles: Manny Machado

479px-Manny_Machado_8-10-2012The Baltimore Orioles have had one of the best third baseman in the history of baseball in Brooks Robinson.  Enter Manny Machado who came up to the Majors at the young age of 19.

The Orioles drafted Machado in the 2010 MLB draft, he was the third overall pick.  Machado made his Major League debut in 2012, his first full season was in 2013.  Machado is one of the reasons for the Orioles return to winning and was a major reason why the Orioles had the best defense in baseball history in 2013.

Machado never really played third base in the minors, he spent most of his time playing short stop.  With little practice at third base the Orioles brought Machado up and had him play third everyday.
