The Baltimore Ravens beat the Atlanta Falcons 31-17 in their first preseason game of the season. The starters played longer than some people would expect but it was the backup players that got most of the playing time. Here is my list of players that stood out.
Curtis Painter- The third string quarterback was impressive. He only completed 50% of his passes but he threw three touchdowns and not interceptions. Painter has starting experience so it should not be a surprised that he played well against mostly rookies. I would be surprised if he makes the Ravens roster, they usually keep two quarterbacks. He may be trade bait when cuts come around if he continues to play well.
Tyrod Taylor- The Ravens backup quarterback also looked very good. Taylor’s passing numbers were not great but he did run for 51 yards with five carries. The Ravens plan to use Taylor more this year in different packages. Taylor is very athletic and very accurate with his passes.
Deonte Thompson- Thompson might be the undrafted rookie free-agent that turns heads this summer. The Ravens have depth at wide receiver but Thompson’s game can not be ignored. Thompson scored a touchdown for the Ravens and led the team in receiving yards with 53 yards. I was impressed by Thompson’s speed and quickness.
Bobby Rainey- Another undrafted rookie free-agent Rainey saw a lot of carries in the first preseason game. Rainey ran for some tough yards rushing for 36 yards on 12 carries. The rookie running back also had three receptions for 28 yards.
